Two new fires ignited on the Payette National Forest today.
The Mesa Fire in the Council Ranger District is about 15-20 acres and is threatening four structures. It is burning in grass and shrub lands. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. Six engines, two helicopters and two single engine air tankers with fire retardant are currently assigned to the fire. An expected containment is not known at this time.
A second fire is burning in the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness. The Cabin Creek Fire is about 600 acres and is burning in grassland. This fast moving fire is not threatening structures or other values at this time. However, a helitack crew of six firefighters is assigned to the fire. This fire escaped initial attack and resources were then diverted fire to the Mesa Fire. The fire management strategy currently in place is to monitor the fire's progression and begin point protection if needed. The cause of this fire is still under investigation.
